NCDMM Congratulates Stephan Biller on His Appointment to AMI CEO

Welcomes Dr. Biller in the MTDG Family of Companies

Blairsville, Pa. — September 3, 2020. The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), a subsidiary of Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group, Inc. (MTDG), extends its congratulations and a warm welcome to Stephan Biller, Ph.D. as the Chief Executive Officer of its new sister company, Advanced Manufacturing International, Inc. (AMI).

“From all of us at NCDMM, we wish Stephan the best as he begins his tenure as CEO of AMI,” said Gary Fleegle, NCDMM CEO. “The NCDMM team welcomes any opportunities to collaborate with him and the AMI team in advancing manufacturing innovations and technologies. Drawing upon his extensive background in digitally transformative technologies, Stephan will most certainly establish AMI as a trusted and recognized global leader of digital and smart manufacturing solutions.”

AMI was founded earlier this month as a new subsidiary of MTDG and a sister, not-for-profit company to the NCDMM to support MTDG’s long-term growth strategy within the global advanced manufacturing industry. AMI seeks to advance innovative technologies and best practices into global manufacturing markets while expanding into the broader U.S. manufacturing sector beyond the defense industrial base currently served for nearly 20 years by NCDMM.

Dr. Biller brings to AMI more than 20 years of experience in analytics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), additive manufacturing, and digital manufacturing, for which he has recently been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

Since 2017, Dr. Biller had served as the Vice President of Product Management for AI Applications & Watson IoT® at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM®). In this capacity, he led IBM’s Industry 4.0 solution products, including IBM Maximo®, TRIRIGA®, Asset Optimization and Operations Optimization using Big Data, AI and Analytics to drive operational excellence from factories and supply chains to the operations of oil fields and power plants. He is a recognized thought leader in Industry 4.0, Digital Twin, and AI for Manufacturing.

Prior to joining IBM in 2017, Dr. Biller served as the Chief Manufacturing Scientist & Manufacturing Technology Leader at General Electric Corporation (GE), founding and leading GE’s “Brilliant Factory” initiative to improve operations by embedding Industrial Internet connected sensors in machines, as well as its additive manufacturing software strategy. Earlier positions include General Motors (GM) Fellow & Global Group Manager for Manufacturing Systems. He holds multiple degrees, including a Dipl.-Ingenieur degree from RWTH Aachen, Germany; a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern University; and an MBA from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Biller is a founding Board member of the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC). He is the recipient of two GE CTO Awards; five Boss Kettering Awards, GM’s highest innovation award; and four Charles McCuen Research Awards, GM’s highest research award. Dr. Biller holds 11 patents and is a certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He is a Board of Director of MTConnect® and served on the Executive Committees of MxD (formerly the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute) and America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute.
