Todd Spurgeon

Additive Manufacturing Project Engineer

Todd Spurgeon has a master’s degree in Additive Manufacturing and Design from Pennsylvania State University, a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech. At Penn State he worked under Dr. Edward “Ted” Reutzel, at Virginia Tech he studied under Dr. Christopher Williams in the DREAMS Lab.

He brings three years of experience in the naval aviation sustainment community working as a digital data production support engineer at NAVAIR FRC-East.  At FRC-East he supported several aircraft platforms on the manufacturing shop floor and as a reverse engineering and advanced design capability shared between the various platforms. He leveraged AM in sustainment activities for fixtures as well as design of a successfully certified end-use repair parts for H-53 rotor blades.

In graduate school he focused on DfAM and how it intersects with considerations for primary and secondary machining processes and also got to work with LP/LW-DED for process development and qualification.

Todd is a lifelong maker. On top of designing, building, and collecting 3Dprinters. He enjoys building fixed wing and multirotor autonomous aircraft as a hobby.  Outside of the makerspace he enjoys cooking and going on hikes with his corgi Hiro.

He hopes to save up enough to design and build his own house with enough space to comfortably operate a HAAS VMC. One day, he is looking forward to getting back to finishing his student pilots license with an eye towards designing, building and flying his own utility aircraft using the manufacturing techniques he had learned along the way.
