John Martin

Additive Manufacturing Research Director

As the Research Director for America Makes, John is responsible for growing the AM ecosystem and driving value from the Institute’s technology portfolio through strategic partnerships and member collaboration.

Before joining America Makes in 2023, John was a full-time professor of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Youngstown State University for nearly a decade. During his tenure, he had the opportunity to speak at professional conferences, publish his research findings, and work on AM research initiatives, including Industry 4.0 Adoption in the SME Defense Supply Chain for Metal Castings, as well as the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Maturation of Advanced Manufacturing for Low-Cost Sustainment (MAMLS). In addition, he has experience and knowledge of operating a wide range of 3D printers and software.

Before his academic career, John worked as a mechanical engineer and, most notably, participated in researching, designing, and optimizing industry-standard equipment to increase efficiency, quality, and control for manufacturing processes.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s in Mechanical Engineering from YSU and is nearing completion of his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. He is a skilled researcher and academic professional specializing in AM with a diverse and extensive materials science and mechanical engineering background.
