Ed Herderick, Ph.D.
Education & Workforce Development Director
Ed is the Education and Workforce Development (EWD) Director at America Makes and the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), a role he assumed in November 2024. He provides strategic leadership and program management for workforce initiatives that support customer projects, build strategic partnerships, and advance additive manufacturing (AM) talent development nationwide.
Ed oversees the planning and execution of workforce programs in collaboration with government and industry partners, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and maximizing impact. His responsibilities include preparing program policies, managing grants, evaluating performance, and collecting and analyzing program data. He also facilitates partnership agreements and serves as a liaison to public and private stakeholders on EWD matters. Working closely with the Office of the Secretary of Defense Manufacturing Technology (OSD ManTech) and the Government Program Management team, Ed ensures America Makes’ workforce initiatives align with the broader Department of Defense (DoD) mission.
With nearly 20 years of experience in industrial AM, from metals to ceramics and polymers, Ed has held leadership roles across academia and industry. He previously served as Vice President for Science and Technology Development at NSL Analytical, where he expanded services in AM and aerospace manufacturing. Before that, he was Director of Additive Manufacturing at The Ohio State University’s Center for Design and Manufacturing Excellence (CDME), where he led major campus-wide AM initiatives, including the launch of the Medical Manufacturing and Modeling (M4) program.
He holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University.
